Clothier is one of your character’s six professions in The Elder Scrolls Online. Draperies specialize in creating light and medium armor using fabric and creature skins. Like other crafting skills, the equipment you can craft with Clothier is comparable to some of the best items you can get in the game, and some set bonuses can only be applied by skilled craftsmen.
This guide will give you a basic overview of everything related to the Clothier profession, so if you’re interested, be sure to read it.
Draperies can make light and medium armor using fabric and leather found on monsters around the world, or by collecting materials from resource nodes. To make items, you will need the necessary raw materials and, like other professions, interact with an appropriate craft station around the world.
Draperies can also make items with different racial styles and traits, all of which will be explained in this guide. You can also improve the quality of existing items by using tannins and deconstruct them to gain more inspiration and resources.
The two main types of resources you will use are fabric and leather. The first two, Raw Jute and Hide Scraps can be used by any character and do not require any skill in the Clothier professions, but other materials will require investing in the skill tree to use.

To be able to use raw materials, you must first refine them. This is done by simply visiting any Clothier station in the world.
If you want to craft items beyond level 14, you will need to invest Skill Points in the Clothing skill line. The minimum you will need to spend to use all the raw materials is 8 points, but you can also take other useful liabilities.
- Adaptation (8) – Allows the use of higher level fabric and leather.
- Keen eye: Fabric (3) – The fibrous plants in the world will be easier to see when you are 20-40 meters or closer.
- Hireling outfitter (3) – A mercenary outfitter will send you fabric or leather and possibly other items every day or twice a day.
- Untangle (3) – Improves the chances of extracting ingredients from clothing.
- Sting (3) – Reduces search times by 5% / 10% / 20% and allows you to search for two or even three traits at the same time.
- Tannin expertise (3) – Increases your chances of improving objects with moderate tannins.
As mentioned, spend 8 points on Adaptation is a must if you intend to do crafts at the end of the game. Keen eye is very useful for Clothiers because some raw materials can be difficult to spot in the world. You can safely skip it if you have no trouble locating jute and other materials. Hireling outfitter it is best to take it as soon as possible: sometimes you can get great items straight to your mailbox effortlessly, but it’s up to you to decide if it’s worth spending skill points.
Untangle can be very beneficial for Clothiers because you frequently extract materials from your items. Sting is perhaps the second most advantageous liability: finding all the possible traits on all the elements would take more than 2 years in real time, so reducing it even by 20% can mean a lot of time saved (more information on times below). Finally, Tannin expertise will help you improve the items with less tannins used; high quality tannins can be difficult to find and if you often improve the quality of your items, this passive is not a bad choice.
An important element for being a skilled tailor is access to multiple traits. AT learn to add traits to objects, you will first need to search for them by destroying existing objects containing the trait you want. This means that if you want to add for example Impenetrable (increased resistance to critical hits) to a certain plastron, you will need to obtain an existing plastron with Impenetrable related to a quest, a falling monster, or another player. Searching for this trait on a chest piece, however, only allows you to add it to that item location – you will not be able to add it to gloves or boots unless you destroy and search for it. object locations also.
It is also important to know that for each object location to which you want to add the same trait, the search times will double each time. The first search takes 6 hours, the second 12 hours, etc., for a total of 64 days per article. 8 lines and 14 elements mean that it would take almost 900 days or real time to find everything. The Extraction tab of the craft interface allows you to deconstruct existing objects into basic materials. Extraction will provide you with all of the raw materials used to create the item, but will also potentially give you tannins, which are used to improve the quality of an existing item. The extraction interface is also used to refine the raw materials.
Since the majority of the items you make will simply be made for the purpose of leveling your profession, extracting them for additional materials (and Inspiration) is a good way to recover part of your investment. It is important to remember that extracting items made by other players gives up to 800% more inspiration than extracting items that you have made yourself!
Most equipment The Elder Scrolls online is not worth selling to suppliers, and more often than not it is better to use it for research or extraction.
Upgrading existing items to a higher quality is a great advantage for artisans, including Clothiers. The game objects have 5 quality levels: white (normal), green (fine), blue (higher), purple (epic) and gold (legendary). To improve an element, you will need tannins, usually obtained by extracting elements. Hireling outfitter will often send them to you too, or you can also buy them from other players. When you extract, for example, blue elements, you can only obtain embroidery tannin which is used to transform green elements into blue elements. This makes purple and gold tannins quite rare and expensive, as you would need to destroy several items of the respective quality to get them.
When you improve items, you cannot ignore quality levels, which means that you CANNOT upgrade a green item directly to purple. Instead, you will first need to upgrade your green element to blue, then use additional tannins to change to a purple. With five levels of quality, there are also four different tannins:
- hem – improves the quality from white to green
- Embroidery – improves the quality of objects from green to blue
- Dreugh wax – improves the quality of items from blue to purple
- North lining – improve the quality from purple to gold
Improvement of items may fail, in which case the item you are trying to improve will be permanently destroyed! By adding a tannin, you have a 20% chance of improving the quality of an item, and you can increase it to 100% with five tannins, although it becomes more expensive if you do. This does not take into account passive competence Tannin expertise which increases your base chances of improving items.
When creating objects, you have a choice of where you want the object, how many materials to use, and what characteristics you want your items to have. But you can also choose to create elements in a particular racial style. The game currently includes 14 different racial patterns that change the appearance of the items when worn.
Your own racial style is automatically unlocked, which basically means that if you play Breton, you can create objects in Breton style. Additional patterns are unlocked by finding (or purchasing from players) racial pattern books, used to teach your character how to create items in this particular style. Once you learn an additional racial style, it will be unlocked for all professions, not just Clothier.
Manufacturing in different racial styles also uses a specific racial style gemstone. These ingredients are frequently found in lootable nightstands, cupboards, and similar world objects, and you can also obtain them by deconstructing objects made in a particular racial style.
Racial motives have no impact on the functionality or stats of an item, but only on its physical appearance. It is not important to manufacture in a particular racial style, but there is a market for it and many players will seek to purchase items with a specific racial visual appearance.
Like all other craft skills, Clothiers will also want to improve their profession as quickly as possible. Experience in the professions is indicated by Inspiration, which is essentially an experience bar (do not confuse it with your own character’s experience bar; crafting items will not be increase your character XP or levels).
Just like other craft skills, a good rule of thumb is to first create items that you will actually use. However, creating objects is not the most effective gain of inspiration points (PI): deconstructing them gives more! Deconstructing quest rewards and monster drops will produce the greatest amount of IP, so instead of selling everything to sellers for relatively small amounts of gold, use it to upgrade your Clothier. When it comes to IP gains, the quality and level of the item are the main factors that determine how much IP you will gain, so extracting the blue items will produce more IP than the green items , and higher level items will also produce more IP than lower level items.
Something that many Blacksmiths and carpenters also use to level their profession is also applicable for clothiers: the extraction of objects made by other players or your alts gives up to 800% more inspiration than the extraction of the same objects as you create yourself. Find a partner in crime and exchange the articles you create with them and vice versa: you will propel your profession much faster and with much less spent resources. If you join a player guild, there is bound to be at least one person interested in trading items with you, so take advantage!
Finally, since the yield of intellectual property during the deconstruction of articles is linked to its level, it is often wise to manufacture articles which consume the least amount of raw materials. Making level 4 or level 14 items is generally the most efficient, but I’ll have more detailed calculations here shortly.
