Woodworking is one of the three professions The Elder Scrolls online which create elements that can be fitted. Blacksmiths create metallic weapons and heavy armor, Clothiers make light and medium armor, while Carpenters are able to manufacture Bows, staves and shields.
Although woodworking is slightly less popular than most other trades, it is by no means without benefits. Archers looking to create their own bows or mages in search of unique sticks will certainly find this craft skill useful for specializing. The following guide will give you a basic overview of woodworking.
Woodworking is used to create weapons, shields and bows. Particularly useful for archers, rangers, healers and even tanks, woodworking can be beneficial at all stages of the game. The materials used are of course different types of wood, and to start your carpentry adventures , you don’t need to invest skill points. To craft items beyond level 14, you will have to start spending skill points in the passive skill line, which also has other advantages.
Carpenters can also add and search for features, and improve and deconstruct objects. Various aspects of this profession are explained below.
As soon as you finish the Coldharbour tutorial and come your starting island, you will begin to discover maple wood, the first type of wood used to make basic items. It is used to craft level 1-14 equipment and does not require any skill points invested to be used, but must be refined into sand maple before it can be used to craft items. All the raw materials used by the carpenters are listed in the table below:

Refining raw wood into sanded wood is done by visiting any woodworking station in the world and selecting the “Extraction” tab. On average, you will need about 7 raw lumber to refine in sand, but the numbers may vary.
A variety of passive skills are available for carpenters, some of which are necessary for higher-level crafts, while some are simply practical and useful to acquire. You can invest a total of 24 points in this skill tree, “Woodworking” having 1 skill point invested by default.
- The Woodcraft (1/9) – Allows the use of higher level wood.
- Keen eye: Wood (3) – Wood knots around the world are easier to spot within 20/30/40 meters.
- Lumberjack Hireling (3) – The hiring of lumberjacks will send you carpentry equipment and possibly other articles once or twice a day.
- Wood extraction (3) – Improves your chances of extracting ingredients from woodworking.
- Carpentry (3) – Reduces search times by 5% and allows you to search for two / three objects at the same time.
- Resin expertise (3) – Increases your chances of improving items with resins.
If your goal is (and should be) to make higher level items, investing 8 points in The Woodcraft will be necessary, otherwise you will not be able to use ingredients beyond the maple wood. Keen eye: Wood can easily be overlooked, especially if you have no trouble seeing the raw materials in the world. Wood is often much easier to spot than grasses or fabric knots, so be sure to skip Keen Eye. Lumberjack Hireling is a matter of preference, but if you can afford 3 points, I suggest taking it: raw materials and additional resins are always helpful.
Wood extraction will also help you get more equipment and save money gold long-term. Since you will be extracting most of the items that you create, it may be a good idea to pick up the extraction of the wood as soon as possible. Carpentry is very important and I strongly suggest devoting 3 skill points to it: research time takes an enormous amount of time and reducing it by 20% can mean a huge difference. In addition, being able to search for up to three traits simultaneously is also a big time saver. finally Resin expertise will help you spend less resources on improving your items, especially important because better quality resins are hard to find and quite expensive.
Forge and Clothing have a total of 112 traits to look for, while woodworking has “only” 48. Anyway, it takes more than 6 months of real time to find all the traits on all the objects that can be made with this profession. Therefore, it is not as necessary to invest skill points to reduce research time, but it can still be very useful if you want to be able to craft a variety of items as soon as possible.
Armor and weapons traits work the same for carpenters as they do for tailors and blacksmiths. To search for a particular trait, you will need to destroy an existing object with the same trait. The first search will take 6 hours, and once a trait is searched, you can only add it to the same type of object during manufacturing. Essentially this means that if you are looking for Specific (increase in critical hit rating) on an arc, you will not be able to add the trait to an object except for another arc, unless you also search for it for other object locations. The search for the same feature for additional objects, however, doubles the time required for its search.

Extraction is used to decompose existing elements into their basic materials and will destroy them permanently. By deconstructing equipment, you can gain wood used to build the items, but also resins, racial-style gemstone ingredients, and inspiration. You can extract all items, including quest rewards, monster drops, and even items made by you or other players.
Deconstructing items created by other players gives you almost three times more inspiration points (PI) than deconstructing your own items, so if possible, always try to trade your crafted items with other players. Mining is the most important part of upgrading your carpentry profession, so instead of selling items to sellers for tiny amounts of gold, it’s really worth extracting them for the ingredients and inspiration.
Like clothing and forging, carpenters can also improve the quality of items. The upgrade increases the bonuses you get from your gear, including basic defenses, traits, and nice to meet you. There are five quality levels: white (normal), green (fine), blue (superior), purple (epic) and gold (legendary). To improve the quality of the item, you will need Resins, which are obtained by deconstructing objects, via your Minor Hireling passive, or by purchasing them from other players.
Resins include Not (upgrade from white objects to green), Turpen (green to blue), putty (blue to purple) and Rosin (purple to yellow). Adding a single resin will have a 20% chance of improving an item, and if you fail the improvement process, the original item will be permanently destroyed. You can add 5 resins for a guaranteed chance of improvement, or you can invest skill points in Resin expertise in the Woodworking skill line to increase the basic chances of improving the quality of the object.
Carpenters can also work in different racial styles. The style of your own race is automatically unlocked, but 13 other racial patterns will need to be learned through the skill books found in Tamriel. You can even start finding books on racial grounds in the departure areas, or buy them from other players.
Once you consume a skill book with a racial style, it will be unlocked for all professions, not just woodworking. Racial patterns do not affect bonuses or attributes of the item, only its visual appearance.
Creating articles is intended to provide you with equipment and is not the most optimal way to level up in a profession, although it is a significant part of your IP gain. Experience in the trades is indicated by Inspiration, and manufacturing and deconstructing objects provides you with Inspiration Points (PI). You can also find books on the history of the whole world which, when used, give you a level in woodworking, also helping you to level it faster.
The biggest contribution to gaining intellectual property is deconstruction, just like other creative skills. Higher-level and better-quality items will give you more IP than extracting lower-level or lower-quality items, of course. In addition, you can extract raw materials from objects you have made yourself, thereby recycling some of the materials you have spent, but it is not recommended: the extraction of identical objects made by other players (or your alternative characters) will give you around 800% more IP. Ask your friends or guild mates to trade their artifacts with yours, and you both will benefit.
The PI yield is not related to the amount of materials used to make items, but at the item level, so as much as possible, try to make items that don’t require a lot of raw materials to be made. These are generally level 4 and level 14 items, but I will be posting specific and more detailed calculations on IP earnings shortly here, so stay tuned.
Although often overlooked, woodworking can be just as useful as other professions. If you want to supply your guild with quality bows, shields and sticks, woodworking is a worthwhile investment in time and gold, and due to research time, it is best to consider leveling it up. as soon as possible. For solo play, however, this profession is not as useful as others since the combination of shields, staves and bows is far too rare for a build.
